Sarasota Dental Sealants Glossary

A dental sealant (also called a pit and fissure sealant) is clear or white plastic coating that sticks or bonds to the chewing surfaces of teeth to prevent cavities.

Some teeth, related to aspects associated with their anatomy, are harder to reach with a toothbrush than others, thus they collect bacteria resulting in decay.

Sealing the teeth helps prevent this decay. By bonding plastic material into the grooves of teeth a dentist can create a surface that is smoother. There are no longer any locations on the chewing surface of the teeth that a toothbrush can't access and clean. Thus, dental plaque can be removed more easily and there’s less of a chance for tooth decay to form.

Dental sealants are easy to apply and it takes only a few minutes to seal each tooth. Sealants usually last several years and hold up well to natural activities, such as chewing. Children and teenagers are obvious sealants candidates but some adults with high risk of decay can benefit from them as well.
